SeaWorld Orca Kamea Dies at 11 Years Old

Kamea, a young captive orca at SeaWorld San Antonio has died. According to the Texas marine park, the orca “succumbed to an illness” yesterday. She was only 11.5 years old.

According to Cetabase, Kamea was born on December 6, 2013 at the marine park. Her mother is Takara, born July 9, 1991 at SeaWorld San Diego, California, and held at the San Antonio facility since February 5, 2009. Her father is Kshamenk, who was captured off the coast of Argentina in September, 1992 at approximately four years of age, and held at Mundo Marino in Argentina since November 19, 1992.
Kamea was born via artificial insemination, her purpose, to entertain paying guests. She would never be able to live at her full potential as a wild whale. She would never learn how to hunt prey in the ocean, would never learn how to properly use her echolocation skills, would never have the opportunity to socialize in a natural way, and nor would she be able to experience any semblance of a wild life. Instead, Kamea would live her entire life in a tank – her entire life, completely dictated by humans.
Kamea’s life was drastically cut short as a result of her illness, one which has not yet been revealed. Her purpose at the park was to entertain, not to educate. How can one possibly learn about what it means to be a wild, free-ranging sophisticated mammal of the sea when the majority of their natural behaviors are suppressed in captivity? In this day and age, there is no justification in breeding dolphins and other whales for entertainment.
The only ethical thing marine parks and aquariums should be implementing are seaside sanctuaries, where the mammals can live out the rest of their lives in peace and dignity – out of concrete tanks, out of the entertainment business and in as natural an environment as possible.
